For existing SMARTL customers

SMARTL Device Setup

Install our wildcard certificate authority once per device so your iPhone, iPad, or Android device can connect to your home's SMARTL system without browser warnings and with full PWA features.

iOS / iPadOS

For iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch.

Download SMARTL_CA.cer

Android

For Android phones and tablets.

Download SMARTL_CA.crt

Both downloads contain the same root CA certificate - only the file extension differs (iOS expects .cer, Android expects .crt). One CA covers every SMARTL installation we have ever deployed.

iOS / iPadOS Setup

Step 1: Download the certificate on the device

Open this page in Safari on the iPhone or iPad and tap the iOS download button above. Tap Allow when iOS asks whether to download a configuration profile.

You can also email SMARTL_CA.cer to yourself and tap the attachment in Mail - the same flow applies from there.

Step 2: Install the profile

On modern iOS (12.2 and newer) the profile sits in Settings until you install it.

  1. Open Settings General VPN & Device Management
  2. Under Downloaded Profile, tap SMARTL by VIRTUALHI
  3. Tap Install in the top-right corner
  4. Enter your device passcode when prompted
  5. Tap Install again to confirm, then Done

Step 3: Enable trust (required)

Without this step, SMARTL will still show a security warning. iOS installs the profile but does not auto-trust it.

  1. Open Settings General About
  2. Scroll to the bottom and tap Certificate Trust Settings
  3. Find SMARTL by VIRTUALHI in the list
  4. Toggle the switch ON (it turns green)
  5. Tap Continue to confirm

Step 4: Add SMARTL to the home screen

  1. In Safari, open the SMARTL URL we provided you (typically https://<your-zone>.smartl.app)
  2. Tap the Share button → Add to Home Screen
  3. Confirm the name and tap Add
  4. Launch SMARTL from the home-screen icon for full PWA mode (status bar hidden, offline cache, fast warm-start)

Android Setup

Step 1: Download the certificate

Tap the Android download button above and save SMARTL_CA.crt to your device.

Step 2: Install from storage

Path varies slightly by manufacturer (Samsung, Google, Xiaomi, etc.) - the landmarks are the same.

  1. Open Settings Security (or Security & privacy on newer Android)
  2. Find More security settings Encryption & credentials Install a certificate
  3. Choose CA certificate and confirm the warning
  4. Locate the downloaded SMARTL_CA.crt file and select it
  5. Confirm SMARTL by VIRTUALHI appears in the trusted credentials list

Step 3: Add to home screen (Chrome)

  1. Open the SMARTL URL in Chrome
  2. Tap the menu (⋮) → Install app (or Add to Home screen on older versions)
  3. Launch from the home-screen icon for the full PWA experience

This is a self-signed root CA used internally by SMARTL to secure traffic between your device and the Crestron processor on your local network. It does not give us any access to your device, and it is only trusted by devices you install it on. Because it is a wildcard CA covering every *.smartl.app hostname, one install per device covers every SMARTL property you visit. When the server certificate behind it is renewed periodically, the CA on your device stays valid - you do not need to repeat this setup.

Troubleshooting

iOS: certificate isn't in "Certificate Trust Settings"

Check Settings → General → VPN & Device Management. If the profile is still in Downloaded Profile, you need to install it from there before it appears under About → Certificate Trust Settings.

Still seeing security warnings in Safari or PWA

  • Confirm trust is enabled (the toggle should be green)
  • Force-quit Safari or the SMARTL PWA and reopen it
  • Make sure you are on the same Wi-Fi network as your Crestron processor

Android: "CA certificate" option is missing

Some manufacturers hide CA install behind Encryption & credentials or More security settings. Search the Settings app for "certificate" if you can't find the menu.
